"Alcohol is a generic name for a large group of organic chemical compounds ... They are all derivatives of hydrocarbons in which one or more of the hydrogen atoms have been replaced by a hydroxyl (-OH) functional group. Hydrocarbons are compounds which contain hydrogen (H) and carbon (C) only" (Boggan, 2003b). The "largest ethyl alcohol producers and consumers in the world" are the U.S. and Brazil (Malveda, Inoguchi and Janshekar, 2006). In both countries, "fermentation ethyl alcohol is used primarily in motor fuels as a direct blend with gasoline, an oxygenate and gasoline volume extender: (Malveda, Inoguchi and Janshekar, 2006). Ethanol use in motor fuels "is gaining increasing support worldwide. In the United States, ethanol production and consumption for fuel has increased and the United States is a global leader, along with Brazil" (Malveda, Inoguchi and Janshekar, 2006). Ethanol use has increased in both Europe and China; in India, "the government decided to allow the sale of E-5 (5% ethyl alcohol blend in gasoline) in 2002. As a result, more ethanol plants are being constructed" (Malveda, Inoguchi and Janshekar, 2006). Alcohol plays a part in our daily lives because they are used in so many products. There is alcohol in gasoline, paint, "food additives, thickeners ... antifreeze ... as a component of cleaners ... cosmetics ... and other household items, as fuels (ethanol) and as a component of beverages: beer, wine, spirits and champagne (Boggan, 2003a). Most of the concern about alcohol centers on the alcohols that we ingest (Boggan, 2003a).
