abuse and what can (or should) be done in each case. Forced Birth Control In this case, we are asked to consider a mother with a criminal record of physically
abusing her children, and whether a judge can sentence her to take birth control measures to prevent the birth of other children. This has actually happened. In Illinois in 1993,
a McLean County judge "ordered a 22-year-old woman to have Norplant - matchstick-sized hormonal implants - inserted in one of her arms to prevent pregnancy. The woman had been convicted
of beating her infant son" (Villanueva, 1993, p. 04A). The case is troubling for people on all sides of the issue, since forced birth control (forced sterilization) smacks of
tyranny and Nazism. The Illinois legislature has since banned forced sterilization, though it remains in place if the defendant in a criminal case wants to choose birth control as part
of her sentence (Villanueva, 1993, p. 04A). An equally troubling case arose in Texas in 2004, when a schizophrenic woman who was in prison for killing her baby became
pregnant while incarcerated (Ackerman, 2004, p. 1). Questions arose immediately, particularly in regard to the management of inmates in the states mental health system; this is the womans third pregnancy,
two of which occurred while she was incarcerated (Ackerman, 2004). Psychiatric patients are forbidden to engage in sex, "but San Antonio State officials emphasized they dont have enough staff
to constantly monitor everyone ... But some psychiatrists outside the Texas mental health system said the pregnancy is evidence that such a patient isnt getting proper care and supervision" (Ackerman,
