There are traffic laws with which many people get caught violating. While the average citizen might complain about such laws, they are there for the purpose of social control. Theoretically,
if there were no speed limits imposed on the highways, people would be likely driving more than 100 miles per hour. With a 55 or 65 mph rule in place,
people still drive about 80 or 90 miles per hour. Not too long ago, New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine was involved in an accident and his speed was clocked at
90. This anecdote reveals that rules will be violated. However, what is unseen is the fact that without the rules, things could be a lot worse. What is social control?
The concept may be defined as follows: "The sanctions that are used to encourage conformity and obedience-and to discourage violation of social norms-are carried out through both informal and formal
social control" (Schaefer, 2005: 174). When discussing social control mechanisms, it is important to distinguish between two types. There are formal and informal social controls. Driving rules are the formal
type. People slow down when they see a police car. However, an informal mechanism in the same situation might be ones mother in law in the back seat asking how
fast one is driving. The former is a legal rule and the threat of a speeding ticket hangs over the drivers head. The second, or the informal mechanism, is the
fear of being reprimanded by another citizen. In this case, the informal attachment is to family, which has a greater effect than would a stranger. In either case, one can
