paradigms, but an old mainstay is to categorize people as either a Type A or B personality. This is a model which was originally developed in the early 1970s when
personality traits were aligned with heart disease ("Personality," 2005). Siegman & Smith (1994) for example focus on anger and Type A behavior. It is now believed that only certain traits,
such as anger, affect the heart in a negative way. Since the time that the A/B model was conceived, many studies have been done regarding heart disease and Type
A behavior, but results are mixed. When looking at the workplace, Type A people are easily discerned. One sees them speed walking and talking. They are always punctual and
always do more work than required. Type B personalities look like they have no worries. They go to work, do their jobs and are not concerned about the future. They
do not care if they arrive a few minutes late, a scenario that would put added pressure on a Type A. There are of course many different personalities and
it is hard to categorize people into two groups. That said, it does seem that some people are high stress and high maintenance, while others just go with the flow.
The traits do seem to be a part of personality. Yet, a curious factor is how people become this way or that way. Is it genetic? Are there factors in
the environment that predispose a person to this type of behavior? Cary and Fraser (1992) claim that the personality typing could be tied to the mothers personality. Of course,
