Type 1 Diabetes is of particular concern because it can target children. There has, in fact, been a four percent annual increase of this condition in children less than four years of age and over a six percent increase in children under five years of age (Wilson, 2008). Known by a variety of names such as "insulin-dependent diabetes", "childhood-onset diabetes" and "juvenile-onset diabetes", Type 1 Diabetes comes with potentially astronomical consequences (Merck Manual, 2001). Individuals that are diagnosed with this condition when under thirty years of age risk death at a rate 4.7 time higher than that than do individuals without such a diagnosis (Feltbower, Bodansky, Patterson, et. al., 2008). An estimated half of the deaths in one study involving those diagnosed before age thirty were attributed to "acute or chronic complications of diabetes" (Feltbower, Bodansky, Patterson, et. al., 2008). While death rates were considerably higher (4.6 as compared to 1.71) for individuals aged fifteen to twenty-nine years of age suffering from this condition, death rates for those aged zero to fourteen was still excessive (Feltbower, Bodansky, Patterson, et. al., 2008). Not only is the increased threat of death concerning in Type 1 Diabetes, so too are the concerns introduced by the need to treat the condition and the other impacts that occur when this need is not adequately addressed.
