Fortunes "100 Best Companies to Work For" is an annual list of the most employee-friendly companies in America. Wegmans Food Markets and American Express have been
on the list for several years; in 2005 Wegmans gained the lead position. The purpose here is to discover what makes these companies so good for employees and why
their management is devoted to ensuring that employees are happy in their jobs. What Makes Them "Best" The Great Place to Work Institute
in San Francisco creates and administers a 57-question survey of "350 randomly selected employees from each company and asks about things such as attitudes toward management, job satisfaction, and camaraderie"
(Levering and Moskowitz, 2005; p. 97). The survey is only part of the search for the 100 best, but it accounts for two-thirds of the total score (Levering and
Moskowitz, 2005). Fortune examines the policies and culture of each company included in the survey. One-third of the total score is
derived from Fortunes assessment of issues such as demographics, benefits and other topics. It scores "companies in four areas: credibility (communication to employees), respect (opportunities and benefits), fairness (compensation,
diversity), and pride/camaraderie (philanthropy, celebrations)" (Levering and Moskowitz, 2005; p. 97). If news that could affect employees faith in a company breaks after decisions are made, the company likely
will be excluded and a runner-up listed in its place (Levering and Moskowitz, 2005). The Great Place to Work Institute says that "Americas
