that the writing transcends stereotypes and becomes extraordinary. This paper explores the themes of two of Hemingways works: the novella The Old Man and the Sea, and his novel A
Farewell to Arms. Discussion We begin with A Farewell to Arms since it is the earlier work, published in 1929. Like all of Hemingways stories, the plot can be
summed up in a couple of sentences: Lt. Frederic Henry, an American volunteer serving in the Italian army in World War I is wounded, falls in love with his nurse
Catherine Barkley, and deserts to be with her. They escape to Switzerland where she dies giving birth to his child. He is left alone to ponder what he has done
and what he will do with the rest of his life. Much of this is autobiographical: Hemingway did volunteer with the Italian army where he was an ambulance driver. He
was wounded and apparently fell in love with his nurse, though opinions on this vary. However, having the author and the main character so closely related is dangerous for the
reader. Its tempting to think that this is nothing more than Hemingway retelling events in his life, but thats not the case. Frederic Henry is not Ernest Hemingway and the
two should not be confused. Henry is interesting because he is not one of Hemingways Code Heroes. For one of Hemingways Code Heroes, life is to be lived to the
full, because there is nothing after death ("The Hemingway Code Hero"). Such a man "does not talk about what he believes in" but instead is a "man of action rather
