it argues that the author of the essay has misunderstood Morells commitment to both Candida and to his work, and that his misunderstanding renders his arguments less effective than they
could be. Discussion In the introduction to Arms and the man, a writer known only as "M" writes that the central note of Candida is that "with the true woman,
weakness which appeals to the material instinct is more powerful than strength which offers protection." (The play is available on Project Gutenberg, which unfortunately doesnt identify the author of its
introduction.) That is, a true woman will instinctively be drawn to the man who needs her strength as a mother more strongly than she will be drawn to a man
who can protect her. As the play unfolds, its clear that Shaw has illustrated that belief perfectly, for it is Morell who is weak, who earns her love and protection.
Marchbanks, being stronger, is left alone with his idealized notion of love. Shaw describes Morell as a "first rate clergyman, able to say what he likes to whom he likes,
to lecture people without setting himself up against them, to impose his authority on them without humiliating them, and to interfere in their business without impertinence" (Shaw). He has never
exhausted his store of "spiritual enthusiasm and sympathetic emotion," qualities that have allowed him to minister to his parishioners with great success. He cares deeply for the people he serves,
to the point where he has lost sight of the truth of his own marriage. When he and Candida take in Marchbanks, the younger man, all passion and fire, is
