two articles about slavery. Discussion The first article is by Eric Wolf, who studies the origins of the slave trade in Europe and the Caribbean. His focus is not so
much on the slaves working in the South as on the process as a whole. He notes that slaves were valued as commodities: in South America people searched for gold
and silver; in North America, they hunted beaver for its pelt; in Africa, the "main commodity came to be black ivory"-people, to be sold primarily in the Americas" (Wolf, 1982,
p. 195). But the slaves were sold to different regions of the world for different purposes. He also notes that Europeans were sold as slaves to the Islamic world
and throughout the Mediterranean, where they worked the sugar cane fields and the mines (Wolf, 1982). The Dutch used slaves they got from such places as Mindanao and Madagascar to
work in South Africa; Batavia in Java, a Dutch settlement, "was peopled with slaves brought from the Bay of Bengal" (Wolf, 1982, p. 195). The slaves described here are mostly
white or Asian, but as he notes, from about the 15th century on, most of the slaves came from Africa (Wolf, 1982). And slaves from Africa were sold mostly in
the Americas. Wolf first discusses who bought these slaves and why, and then answers the question, "Why Africa?" If slaves had been sent from Europe to the East, why did
this pattern cease? During the 16th century, the Spanish demanded laborers for silver mines and on plantations and the Portuguese wanted workers for Brazil; demand also arose for workers on
