Von Huben 8/2010 Please Introduction There are many ways of presenting "mother" in fiction, but no matter how an author chooses to draw the portrait, the mother figure is one of the primal archetypes of human society. This paper discusses the mothers in The American Dream and The Revolt of Mother, as well as exploring the problems caused by miscommunication among family members. Discussion The American Dream is a play by Edward Albee, best known for Whos Afraid of Virginia Woolf? Well start with it since it is arguably more difficult to interpret than Revolt of Mother. Albees play is part of what is called the theater of the absurd, a phrase that is difficult to define but is usually understood to include plays in which the audience is often asked to find meaning for themselves. The language may be eloquent or banal; there is none of the lofty poetry of Shakespeare here. The stage "pictures" presented may be more important than the dialogue (Esslin), as with the boxes brought on stage in The American Dream. It is a sort of free-form theater that finds meaning in absurdity, and asks us to think about our lives by presenting them as what they often are-confusing and disordered. The American Dream is just such a play, presenting us with a minimal number of characters and dropping facts here and there so that the audience has to piece together whats happening from the hints Albee leaves.
