a brief glimpse of a possible future, while Faulkner shows readers what happens when an impulse is carried through to its horrific end. Discussion The Chrysanthemums tells of a sturdy woman, Elisa, who feels trapped by her life in the Salinas Valley. She is helping her husband make a go of the place, but she has begun to feel unfulfilled and not at all like a woman. The story describes her as looking "blocked and heavy in her gardening costume, a mans black hat pulled low down over her eyes" (Steinbeck). The impression is that she is no longer a woman, and to some degree that appears to be true. She has taken on a male persona: strong, competent, hard working and capable. Her husband Henry is also a hard worker and a decent man, but its easy to see that the marriage is now a habit, not a relationship; there is no passion left in it. But all that disappears when a tinker, a traveling repair man who fixes pots, pans, knives and so on, comes along. He is really a scoundrel with nothing to offer, but one thing: he is a stranger, and she is free to imagine that he will bring the excitement back into her life. When she gives him a cutting from her prized mums to give to another woman (its almost certain that he invented the story on the spot), she is symbolically giving herself to him. Steinbeck is very subtle: the flirtation between the two has to be inferred from lines like "Kneeling there, her hand went out toward his legs in the greasy black trousers. Her hesitant fingers almost touched the cloth. Then her hand dropped to the ground" and "She was kneeling on the ground looking up at ...
