as a species have already damaged the planet to the point where it might not recover and be able to sustain us; on the other are those who do not
believe there is any danger at all. This paper considers two speeches that take diametrically opposed views of the issue. Discussion The first speech is by former U.S. Vice President
Al Gore, who was an environmentalist before it was cool to worry about environmental issues. He is direct and passionate and issues a stern warning: "We have arrived at a
moment of decision. Our home - Earth - is in grave danger. What is at risk of being destroyed is not the planet itself, of course, but the conditions that
have made it hospitable for human beings" (Gore, 2009). He then goes on to make his points clearly, step-by-step, beginning with the fact that the United States if facing two
other crises of great importance, the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq; and the current economic recession (Gore, 2009). Having said that, he makes his main point, that all the challenges
the U.S. is facing today have a common link: our "over-reliance on carbon-based fuels" (Gore, 2009). He then tells how and why our reliance on carbon fuels is damaging: he
notes that it makes us dependent on the Middle East, which is notoriously unstable; and that our reliance on the OPEC nations ties our economy to theirs, which puts us
on a "roller-coaster of rising and falling oil prices," risking jobs and "our way of life" (Gore, 2009). The biggest problem he sees, though, is that continued use of these
fuels will eventually take us to and over "several dangerous tipping points which scientists have repeatedly warned - again just yesterday - will threaten to make it impossible for us
