their fascination with the lawbreakers that populate these films. This paper considers one of the great films of all time: Scarface, both the original and its remake. Discussion Fans go
back and forth on which one is better, but the 1932 original seems really special, not least because it has a great deal of black humor in it, and because
it has a powerhouse performance by Paul Muni as Tony Camonte, the scarred gangster of the title. Muni, who was directed to play the character with the physicality of an
ape (Dirks, 2009), gives the impression of a volcano always about to erupt. There is something quintessentially untamed and savage about him, which lends his performance an amazing energy. Tony
Camonte is a monster, yes, but hes a surprisingly attractive one; there is always something attractive about people who are willing to do anything to get what they want. They
take risks and break rules most people obey without question. The film is also shot in the style of a film noir, all odd angles and menacing shadows. It
also has a recurring motif of an "X"-any time the symbol appears on the screen, a murder will follow shortly afterwards. The appearances of the "X" are very creative: sometimes
its a sign, in one case its the straps on the back of Cescas dress. But its also an obvious visual pun, as in "X marks the spot." The film
has a sort of manic vigor about it that sweeps the audience along, and gets them to laugh at its exaggerated violence. The story is fairly simple: Tony Camonte,
