The domination of the poor by the rich is gone as is the income inequity that is proving so divisive in America today. This society goes by many names; probably
the most familiar is Shangri-La. The dream has inspired many people, including the authors William Morris and Edward Bellamy, whose novels News from Nowhere and Looking Backward both describe
utopian societies. However, Bellamys utopia arises from capitalist roots, while Morriss society is a backlash against Socialism. This paper argues that although most people consider capitalism and Socialism as
polar opposites, both are oppressive and both can provoke a strong reaction such that members of the society will seek a utopia to replace it. Discussion The novels are
parallel in structure: both feature protagonists who fall asleep and wake up far in the future, where they find themselves in utopian societies. The protagonist of Bellamys book, Julian West,
actually survives in a sort of suspended animation and really does wake up in 2000; in Morriss novel, the protagonist has a dream of the future. As plot devices
these are somewhat threadbare, but they serve their purpose: to allow the author to comment on the ills of his own society by comparing it to an ideal society, even
though that ideal does not exist. The society that Julian West leaves behind is capitalist; like modern society, its ugly, stratified and grossly unfair to the poor and the working
class. The description of 19th century society comes not from Julian, but from the man who finds him, Dr. Leete. He and Julian stay up talking, late into
