Debut as a Literary Person, starts off with a typical Twain approach: self-deprecating and sly humor as he tells how and why he wanted to be considered a literary person.
He says he had "already published one little thing (The Jumping Frog) in an Eastern paper," but he didnt think that counted, since being published in a "mere newspaper" did
not make him a "Literary Person" (Twain). In order to be such a person, he had to appear in a magazine (Twain, 2010). Not only would appearing in such a
publication make him a Literary Person, it would make him famous immediately (Twain, 2010). He desired both of these things, as quickly as possible (Twain, 2010). He therefore sought out
the most important magazine in New York and sent a story to them, signing his name "Mark Twain" (Twain, 2010). The story was accepted for publication, at which point Twain
began to think of throwing himself a banquet; unfortunately for him, they misread his name, putting it as "Mike Swain" or "MacSwain"-he says he cannot recall which. But he does
remember that "I was not celebrated and I did not give the banquet. I was a Literary Person, but that was all--a buried one; buried alive" (Twain, 2010). From here,
he tells readers what his story was about, and the tale takes an unexpected turn. For the story within the story is not funny at all. It is comprised mainly
of excerpts from the diaries of 15 men who survived 43 days at sea after their ship burned (Twain, 2010). This isnt fiction: the clipper ship Hornet, under the command
