This paper briefly discusses two of his stories, "Wipeout" and "Unchain my Heart" and describes the similarities and differences between them, and whether or not the gender of the narrator affects their story. Discussion The story "Wipeout" is what most critics probably consider a typical Jones story. The narrator, Herbie, is tough and not particularly nice, particularly in his relations with women. Hes one of those guys whose life centers around his conquest of women; for him, its quantity, not quality that counts. Herbie picks up a girl, Simone, in the library where shes reading philosophy, and sets out to seduce her. His only motivation here is his to indulge his appetite and satisfy his sexual needs. But, quite unexpectedly, he begins to fall in love with her (Jones). True to his own vicious idea of masculine behavior, he dumps her when he realizes that the relationship could become serious (Jones). He says, "I was filled with a generalized sense of loathing, bitterness, remorse, self-pity and despair. Life was so lonely without her. But you have to be true to yourself. What I did sprang from my deepest instincts. The scorpion stings; it cant help itself. There are no choices" (Jones). This is obviously untrue-there are always choices. But Herbie has convinced himself that this is his only option and so he leaves her, and with her any chance to become a decent human being. The reader probably wants to give him a good kick where it will hurt the most. In "Unchain my Heart," the narrator is female, Joness only women narrator.
