by Kate Chopin and "Saboteur" by Ha Jin, with respect to the tone, style, use of setting and character development. Discussion When critics discuss the "tone" of a work, it
means the way in which the author chooses words to convey his meaning (Barnett). Since a reader cant "hear" the tone of the authors voice, he or she indicates their
tone by the "selection and sequence" of words (Barnett 121). Style is literally everything that the writer does to express his meaning; it includes such things as avoiding passive voice,
using the right word, using proper punctuation and grammar, writing coherent paragraphs, writing clearly and so on. Setting and character are self-evident. Lets start with Jins story "Saboteur." The setting
is China just after the Cultural Revolution. The protagonist, Chiu Maguang, and his new bride are having lunch in the square in front of the Muji Train Station when a
policeman dumps his tea on Mr. Chius foot (Jin). When Mr. Chiu makes a mild protest, hes arrested and held for several days before being released. A young attorney who
comes to bail him out is tied to a tree in the jails courtyard and tortured; finally the ordeal ends when Mr. Chiu signs a false confession on a charge
of disrupting the peace and resisting arrest (Jin). He and the young attorney are both released at that moment, and it seems the thuggish police have won. But Mr.
Chiu has just recovered from a bout of hepatitis, and during his stay in jail he felt sure he was having a relapse (Jin). Upon his release, he drags the
