has been said that when Japan is involved in international reflection, it nearly always correlates with their contention toward positive change for its people. However, what inevitably plays out
is the reality that in spite of how the Japanese people would like to believe they have the power to enact such significant change, they are actually incapable of doing
so. "It is true that Japan has entered what can properly be described as an age of uncertainty. The recent fracturing of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and
the parliamentary crisis are symptoms of a disorientation without precedent in postwar Japan" (van Wolferen, 1993, p. 54). The subtle but continual change happening within the confines of Japans political
arena has been credited to the nations relationship with the United States, in that Americas constant infiltration since the Cold War has been instrumental in establishing Japan as being in
need of political refurbishing, with many critics asserting how "the ruling Liberal Democrats have dominated Japanese politics since 1946...the absence of strong opposition parties is hampering Japans progress towards a
true democracy" (Anonymous, 1996, p. 12). While some areas have noted considerably more modification than others, areas such as in domestic reality have experienced somewhat of a less severe
change. In light of these political alterations, it has come to pass that Japans economic potential has left its elites disjointed. According to Aruga (1992), "liberal intellectuals who
