attack so many times that finally President Lincoln, who was personally fond of him, removed him from command. This paper considers the work of two Civil War historians, Thomas Rowland
and James McPherson, and how they view the problematic soldier. Discussion McClellan fascinates us because he seems to be such a bumpkin, and yet he held the post of Commander
of the Army of the Potomac for over a year, during some of the most desperate fighting of the war. Both authors have noted that if theres one constant that
marks McClellans leadership, its his tendency to overestimate the enemys strength. That fault led him to others: demanding reinforcements, refusing to attack, refusing even to move-all of these seem to
have sprung from his constant overestimations of Lees strength in the field. Because he was in command of the huge Army of the Potomac, his actions have come under intense
scrutiny. As far as these two books go, the first thing of note is that Rowlands book is devoted entirely to McClellan and his career whereas McPhersons book deals with
the entire Civil War. That being the case, he doesnt provide as much information about McClellan as Rowland does. Obviously-the focus of his book is not on any one person,
but on the war and the period of Reconstruction that followed. Having said that, its still possible to see where the authors agree and disagree about McClellan. Points of Agreement
and Disagreement between McPherson and Rowland: McPhersons comments about the general are almost entirely negative, and he hammers on the fact of McClellans political affiliation almost constantly. McClellan was a
