of Galilee" by Eugene Delacroix (1798-1863) are two very different paintings of storms. Watteaus painting shows country people busily harvesting and stacking sheaves of grain as a storm darkens the
horizon and a tree bends in the oncoming wind. Delacroixs painting is more heavily laden with emotion, as it shows Jesus and his disciples crossing the Sea of Galilee in
a small craft and caught in the midst of a violent storm. As the disciples struggled to lower the sails, Jesus is shown slumbering, as a desperate apostle approaches him.
The Neo-Classical period in art history began in Europe in the late 1700s and continued into the early nineteenth century ("Neoclassicism"). Romanticism refers to an art movement that developed
