that serve to offer the viewer an incredible amount of visual detail as well as paintings which clearly evoke many different emotions and thoughts. In the following paper we examine
the two paintings, contrasting and comparing them in the process. The paper discusses the subject matter, the expressive content, the structure, and the color in each painting. Subject
Matter The subject matter in these two painting is, at first glance, incredibly different. In "The Immaculate Conception" is obviously an incredibly religious picture depicting the immaculate conception of the
Virgin Mary as we note the angels beside her and her revering look upwards. In "Ave Maria" we are presented with native Tahitian women going about their daily business with
the lush presentation of plants. As such we can see that the subject matter is quite different. At the same time, however, we gain an understanding of the subject matter,
in the form of women, being an important point to discuss. With the Virgin Mary we are offered a woman who will immaculately conceive an infant. In "Ave Maria" we
have one woman as a mother, holding a child upon her shoulder. In this respect we are, through both paintings, given a very powerful presentation of women as mothers and
nurturers. So, while the characters, and the environment, of both pictures differ greatly there is also a sense of femininity that is presented in both paintings that provide the viewer
with a connection to that femininity. Expressive Content As mentioned, the picture of the Virgin Mary has Mary presenting us with a clear expression of reverence. Her face
is tilted upwards as she humbly awaits her duty. The angels have the same expression for the light that is coming from above is clearly the light of God and
