Just as families and the dynamic within them are unique, so are these women. In Bonnie Smith-Yackels story My mother never worked, the author uses a phone call to the
Social Security office as a device to lead into a consideration of her mothers life, and the systematic devaluation of "womens work." The point here is simple and so obvious
that its often overlooked: women who dont work outside the home, but instead are homemakers are considered to have little or no value. The title is ironic: the woman worked
hard all her life, but as she worked at home and did domestic chores, society doesnt consider her to have worked at all. Smith-Yackels mother was a city woman who
wound up on a farm, and had to learn to deal with taking care of farm animals, canning, and all the other chores, in addition to caring for her husband
and a brood of children. Then, when her daughter called to inquire about Social Security benefits, she was told that "well, your mother never worked." Tillie Olsons story I
stand here ironing is narrated by the woman herself, and tells of her inability to make a connection with her daughter Emily, who is a troubled teenager. She was deserted
by her husband and left to raise four small children alone. In order to do so she had to work, so she had to find people to take care of
Emily: she sent her first to relatives, then to day care, finally to a childrens home (Wolff, 2007). By the time Emily is reunited with her mother, she is a
"stiff lonely child" (Wolff, 2007), which is not surprising, considering that she has been shuffled around to numerous caregivers and has formed her own character and personality without her mothers
