for making healthful choices. MATERIALS: WARM-UP: Students will be given the homework assignment of reading the classroom text and reviewing the review concepts prior to the class.
The class will be given a copy of the basic food guidelines in the form of the food pyramid and an overhead of the food pyramid will be discussed.
Teacher-led discuss will focus on the following: 1. Naming the six kinds of nutrients needed in the human body for health. 2. Identifying foods in
each of the five food groups. 4. Discussing how each food identified is represented on the food pyramid. WHOLE CLASS ACTIVITY: Students will be given two different
food labels one for a cereal product that maintains that it is healthy and another childrens sweetened cereal. Comparisons will be made of the two food labels, including a
comparison of sugar content. To the surprise of many students, the "healthy" cereal has as much added sugar as the childrens cereal. Students will discuss why misconceptions occur
about healthy foods. Students will then be asked to create a menu for one meal a day that includes foods that are healthful. Students will work on this
using food labels from a variety of foods provided in class. Students will complete their menu for homework and present their menu to the class the following day.
