The effective analysis of a gobbet requires a grounding in the context of the document at hand. In considering a gobbet one might be faced
with unfamiliar terms or terms which are perplexing within the limitations of the text at hand. The first step in analyzing this text, therefore, is defining the terms at
hand and fitting the gobbet as a whole within its proper framework (Gobbet Guidelines). Typically this requires a certain degree of background reading (Gobbet Guidelines). The World Wide
Web, however, often simplifies the task before us. One might initially be perplexed, for example, in considering the following extract from the introduction to a report on a surprise
inspection of Her Majestys Prison Wormwood Scrubs which was conducted over a ten day time frame in December 2001:
"As promised in February 2000, we wanted to see whether the green shoots we identified then had blossomed. Because of continuing allegations and public concern,
we devoted considerable time and resources to the inspection, so that we could carry out a detailed assessment of the conditions and treatment of prisoners at that particular time.
As well as our usual prisoner survey, we also carried out structured interviews with staff at all levels" (Owers, 2002)
