They may spend their lives killing others in secret, or stealing money from their employer or forging prescriptions. Thio (2004) writes that people can learn a great deal from others
who are excluded from the mainstream of society. Indeed, by studying criminology, one can learn a bit about human behavior and why people do things. Although psychological theory can
perhaps best explain the reasons for certain types of crime such as serial killing-- though sociology does not fail to explain that either-sociology has a number of theories that attempt
to explain the causation of crime. In fact, the field of sociology is better able to examine and explain ordinary criminal behavior than theories that focus on the individual. Why
do people steal cars, submit false claims to insurance companies, cheat on their taxes, or engage in shoplifting? Sometimes there are immediate and obvious answers such as they need the
money because they are chronic gamblers or drug addicts. Yet, there are theories that help to explain how people come to lead this kinds of life and what makes one

due to interactions with others (Andersen & Taylor, 2005). Conflict theory, on the other hand, "links the commission, perception, and treatment of crime to inequality in society" (Andersen & Taylor,
2005, p.178). These are only two of many crime theories. The first theory noted suggests that environment is a significant cause. This is rather obvious. If someone grows up in
