today there is a significant disparity in wealth. The very rich are wealthy beyond imagination while the poor cannot pay their bills or buy needed medicine. But underlying this situation
is the peculiarly American idea that if people work hard, they will always succeed, and that if they fail its because they are somehow unworthy, lazy, or stupid. This belief
is a long-standing one and is hard to overturn, but it doesnt reflect reality. There are millions of Americans who work harder than ever before, and who still cannot make
ends meet. The very fabric of society has changed and the "American dream" has disappeared, leaving many people poor and embarrassed by it. This paper argues that poverty is not
a disease, an illness, or something that people should be ashamed of. It is a fact of life. Two widely differing sources give us information about poverty. One is advice
to brides; the other is religious. The bride is advised to do the following: "Recognizing that poverty is not shameful, and that saying "Id love to do it, but I
really cant afford it" is a polite and reasonable response to a request that you cant handle" (Vyborney, 2006). "Poverty is not shameful" really says it all, because there are
many reasons for poverty and few have to do with laziness or a lack of commitment, as critics would have us believe. For example, suppose someone falls, breaks bones, needs
