The following examination of these works focuses on the differences between the two statues and how these differences reflect the overall differences between the Renaissance style of Michelangelo and the
Baroque style of Bernini. Michelangelos David was begun in 1501 and by 1504, the gigantic marble sculpture, standing 14 feet 3 inches, was in place in front the Palazzo
Vecchio in Florence (Pioch). The figure is pictured just prior to the battle with Goliath. The powerful young mans face is composed but tense. His weapon, which is a slingshot,
which is carried over his shoulder, is practically invisible to a frontal view. This aspect of the sculpture emphasize that Davids victory is not from force, but rather derives from
cunning and intellect (Bloem). This interpretation of the work is verified by the fact that Michelangelo carved the irises of Davids eyes and he did this whenever he wanted to
express an expression of grim determination (Fleming 191). The people of Florence immediately identified with the work, as Michelangelo presented David as a victor who will soon triumph over
seemingly superior enemies (Bloem). As this indicates, Michelangelos David can be interpreted in political terms in regards to how Renaissance viewers perceived it. Historian Edward Burns summarize this perception by
writing that the primary motivation behind Michelangelos sculpture was "the expression of thought in stone" (Burns 412). Furthermore, Burns argues that Michelangelos art went beyond naturalism, as his immense talent
subordinated nature to the "force and sweep" of his ideas (Burns 412). Bernini completed his life-size marble sculpture of the biblical hero between 1623 and 1624. Cardinal Scipione Borghese commissioned
