For instance, on the surface, Shakespeares play, A Midsummer Nights Dream, appears to be little more than a farcical comedy about the bumpy road to matrimony. The play, which
was originally composed to be performed at the wedding of the widowed mother of Shakespeares financial benefactor, the Earl of Southampton to Thomas Heneage in May of 1594 and subsequently
performed two years later at the nuptials of Elizabeth Carey, the granddaughter of his theatrical companys chief patron, was perfectly suited for the amusement of the illustrious wedding guests (Hunter
3). It opens with the impending wedding of Theseus, Duke of Athens, to Amazon Queen Hippolyta, and with Hermia, who wishes to marry Lysander. However, her father Egeus
has other ideas and has selected Demetrius to be his future son-in-law. Meanwhile, Helena, the former fianc?e of Demetrius and also a friend of Hermias, remains passionately in love
with her ex-beau and desires to become his wife. When Hermia and Lysander elope to the Athenian woods, another couple, Oberon and Titania, king and queen of the fairies,
are introduced as well as members of an amateur acting troupe who are rehearsing the play to be performed at the wedding of Theseus and Hippolyta. Thanks to a
fairy love potion that goes horribly awry, the lovers become mismatched, with both Lysander and Demetrius now madly in love with Helena. Eventually, cooler heads prevail and the original
couples are reunited, married, and presumably live happily ever after. However, upon closer examination, this is a play not solely about matters of the heart, but also ponders such
