be left alone (Chopin). In a room to herself, she admits that Brently was a decent man but one she was not deeply in love with. There, in the privacy
of her room and her own thoughts, she admits that what she feels most is a sense of exhilaration at the realization that she is finally free: free to be
her own person, to do what she likes, go where she pleases, and be answerable to no one but herself (Chopin). She is no longer a prisoner of societys rules
for women; she can live her life on her own terms. When Brently comes home, his death having been announced mistakenly, Mrs. Mallard dies of heart failure. It is attributed
to the shock of joy on seeing him again, but the reader knows that it is the shock of having her dream of freedom ripped away from her that kills
her. In Clever Manka, a much happier story, the main character is a brilliant young woman who has the wisdom of Solomon. The story is a folktale, and begins with
a farmer who promises his employee he will give him a heifer in exchange for his work, then tries to avoid making the payment (Clever Manka). The case goes to
the burgomaster, who settles it in favor of the farmers employee, thanks to the clever advice of Manka, the employees daughter. The burgomaster sets three riddles for each of the
