individual had expressed concerns about Jodys ability to handle the promotion and perform adequately, based on her poor performance in tests given at the end of training sessions. After learning this, Mary had some issues around whether Jody should be considered, but Jody went through the battery of necessary tests anyways. Some significant questions were raised following the testing process and in assessing Jody for a promotion. It was recognized that Jody was the only in-house individual to apply for the job, though there were other qualified applicants for the position. Because the company policy leans towards hiring internally, the company questioned whether they should make certain judgment calls about Jody and disregard elements of her assessment (including the tests and an issue of absenteeism). In raising these questions, though, larger views of the hiring process and the ethics of their choices were also brought into question. First, the managers questioned whether they should disregard Jodys test scores and promote her anyways. One of the central reasons for choosing this option is that the managers looked at peer and supervisor reports of Jodys performance and noted that she was viewed as a solid employee with a high degree of company loyalty. Jodys performance records suggest that she has been adequately trained, though her testing outcomes suggest lower performance, and that she has been able to apply her training to daily operations. While lower than average testing outcomes from training programs might not hinder the performance of an individual in daily work activities, generally low testing performance might suggest that Jody has a learning disability or some other factor that influences the testing process that could hinder her ability to perform in a supervisory role.
