This paper compares and contrasts two of his books, Crispin: the cross of lead and The true confessions of Charlotte Doyle. Discussion Since we are dealing with books for
younger people, the similarities and differences are easier to find than in subtler books. Thats not to say that Avis works arent well done, because they are; just that they
are more accessible than some novels. Lets look at the similarities. First of all, they are both adventure stories that take their protagonists out of the setting they are used
to, and thrust them into an unfamiliar world. Crispin is forced into the forest by his mothers death and the cruelty of Lord Aycliffe, and by an accusation of a
theft he did not commit (Avi). He is afraid for his life and so becomes a fugitive, haunting the forest and trying to clear his name (Avi). Charlotte Doyle is
a young lady sailing from England to America in 1832; the two couples who were supposed to sail with her and act as chaperones dont arrive on time, and she
sails alone (Avi). Not only is she the only female on the ship, but some of the crew warn her not to sail with them in the first place (Avi).
She goes anyway and is soon caught up in a mutiny (Avi). At first she sides with the captain, thinking hes a gentleman, then realizes that he is a sadist
and she switches over to the side of the crew (Avi). The captain accuses her and the others of murder, and she has to clear her name. In both cases,
the young people are swept up in events that lead to them finding themselves in serious trouble, with no one to help them out. In Crispins case, one of his
