Girls by Marc. Discussion In its use of color, Bathers Beneath Trees by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner is reminiscent of the lush tropical scenes created by Gauguin; its subject matter also
might also make a viewer think of the other artist, but the resemblance ends there. Where Gauguins tropical scenes are tranquil, Kirchners have a sense of movement that seems almost
violent in its intensity. The vivid color is the first thing a viewer notices. The painting is a view of three nude women who have been swimming; it appears they
are walking up from a beach through dense jungle. The curve of the horizon behind them is greatly exaggerated (as is the whole painting) so that it appears we can
see the curvature of the earth. The jungle foliage itself is a deep blue-green, and dominates the right side of the work, while the three women, two of whom are
standing while the third is seated, occupy the center and left. Their skin is a glowing golden orange, which is in the same family, but not the exact same color,
as the trunks of the palm trees behind them. The figures are elongated and angular, not rounded and feminine, and their placement, plus that of the tree trunks, gives a
strong diagonal component to the work, running from the top left to the bottom right. The use of the diagonal is unexpected and makes the work both irrational and very
strong. The same sense of elongated forms, strong statements and use of intense color is found in Kirchners work Trees in Autumn, painted in 1906. In that painting, the vertical
expression is paramount: the tree trunks drive down into the earth with real force, and the artist has used a lot of red and yellow to emphasize the fact that
