(2010) of National Public Radio related the fact that Twitter has been used by everyone from political pundit Sarah Palin to pop star Justin Bieber to inform their followers.
For the average person without a public agenda or career in need of free publicity, Twitter is another entertaining form of social networking and another option for media-based distraction.
The idea behind Twitter is that individuals can create an account, log into that account, and periodically post information in 140 word "Tweets." These short messages create a unique
method of messaging, requiring both brevity and succintness. Users post everything from their breakfast meals and bodily functions to daily activities and political views. Twitter, though, is not
just a one-way forum; those who "follow" your tweets can also comment on them. When I intiially set up my Twitter account, I had the option of accessing
the Twitter feeds of people in my "friends" list or in my email directory. I selected a few of those individuals, but also decided to follow the tweets of
a number of public figures, including Jennifer Lopez, Palin, Barack Obama, and the Huffington Post. Public figures like Lopez, Palin and Obama all had multiple listings, some obviously fake,
some meant to be detrimental to the public perception of these individuals, and others created by campaign managers or staff. Unlike my "friend" tweets, the tweets provided by these
public figures were much more deliberately constructed and spoke minimally of personal activities or issues. My friend Dan, for example, regularly posted his meals, his feelings after having eaten
them, and the quality of the cafetaria food, amounting to more than 20 posts a day about food. Jennifer Lopez tweeted only once about food, making a statement about
