Discussion The scene is really a "set piece," a huge spectacle that doesnt necessarily move the story forward but is enjoyable in its own right and can, if necessary, stand on its own. Critics have been divided on what, if anything, this scene means, except for everyone to have a good time. But it can be argued that the rest of the film is so steeped in clever dialogue - everybody talks incessantly - that the silent dance routine is not only a moment when everyone can relax, it also points out just how important conversation is to this film. That is, by taking the dialogue out of this scene, Tarantino reminds us of the fact that the rest of the film is full of witty banter. The twist contest takes place at Jack Rabbit Slims, a themed restaurant, where employees are obviously hired because they look like celebrities of the day. In this case, Ed Sullivan introduces the dance contest while Marilyn Monroe holds up the trophy. The sequence starts with Vince and Mia in a car/booth; she wants to dance (Pulp Fiction). He says no no no but she replies that he (Vince) works for her husband, and hes supposed to show her a good time and do what she wants, so shut up and dance because she wants that trophy (Pulp Fiction). A moment later, they step onto the dance floor, remove their shoes, and start doing the twist. The scene is shot very simply.
