Understanding how differences evolve in two human beings who share the same genetic map indeed is an intriguing topic of research. When posed with the question of whether or
not twins separated at birth and without human contact would write the same essay many years later, it becomes necessary to invoke research in both genetics and social development in
order to illustrate why the answer would be no, the twins would not write identical essays. Even though genetics may render two or more individuals alike in many regards,
genetics alone does not a human being make. In other words, genetics is not responsible for every possible aspect of an individual, and therefore cannot possibly result in two
individuals being so alike that they write identical essays. There are a wide variety of reasons why twins separated at birth
and with no outside influences would not remain identical in every way. To understand the reasons for this, it is important to understand the basics of developmental systems theory.
Developmental systems theory essentially contends that no one controls the process of interactions that occur among various factors, such as DNA, cellular structure, social interactions, ecological interactions, etc. (Oyama,
Griffiths and Gray, 2001). And so, this theory maintains that there does not need to be a debate over nature versus nurture, but instead there can be a peaceful
coexistence between the two (Oyama, Griffiths and Gray, 2001). In other words, when applying this principle to the example of the
