written about these men and even then there is more to learn. Because the topic is so vast, we will only be able to look at a few basic facts
about each man. Adolf Hitler Hitler was born in Austria and was above average intellectually but a poor student, doing well only in subjects that interested him (Adolf Hitler,
1994). He appears to have been highly impressionable, and during his teens was particularly moved by Wagners opera "Rienzi," "in which the hero liberates his people from national oppression and
humiliation" (Adolf Hitler, 1994). During this "formative" period of his life, Hitler heard the "increasingly harsh rhetoric of political confrontation that was commonplace in the Austrian Empire of the Habsburg
dynasty" (Adolf Hitler, 1994). Parliamentary sessions in Vienna were marked by physical assaults, fights, riots and insults, and the feeling that representative democracy had failed (Adolf Hitler,1994). It appears that
this "provided Hitler with the notion that only strong leadership could save society from the confusion and disorder that seemed to be an inevitable part of democratic government" (Adolf Hitler,
1994). Hitler proved an able and courageous soldier in World War I, winning the coveted Iron Cross twice. He was blinded temporarily in October 1918 by a gas attack, and
evacuated to Silesia (Adolf Hitler,1994). While convalescing, he heard the news that Germany had lost the war; the news of his countrys defeat made him weep for the first time
