and they had been given the moniker Hard Luck Unit. The leadership style of their commander, Col. Keith Davenport, was not working. He was too friendly with the troops. He
drove himself hard while he barely drove his men at all. After another disastrous mission, General Patrick Pritchard relieves him of command. Brigadier General Frank Savage is sent in to
take over his command. Savage knows the reputation and the losses of the unit and intends to change it. He is willing to take on the responsibilities even though he
has been a desk jockey for a while. When his superior, Pritchard, asks him to take over, he agrees. He drives the men, criticizes them after every mission, and tears
into individuals if he thinks their performance is poor. He has no mercy. The adjutant of the group is Harvey Stovell who, like the men, had great affection for Davenport.
Stovell is like the balance between Savage and Davenport. He always seems calm in the worst of times. As Stovell works with Savage, he begins to trust him. Savage
is especially hard on Col. Ben Gately, at one time calling him a coward. Savage is ramrod stiff during these kinds of talk-downs. Davenport later suffers chagrin when he learns
that Gately was flying with a chipped vertebrae and was in severe pain. One of Gardners leadership attributes is physical vitality and stamina; Gately went beyond the call with this
action; this also demonstrated Gatelys resoluteness and steadiness. Gately was demonstrating excellent leadership through example. Further, Gately will lead the final mission in the movie when Savage has a breakdown.
