when he wrote The Mountain People. He published the Forest People in 1962 which is when he got his start in terms of notoriety. His personal life had become somewhat
public as he was openly gay and had a relationship with a black man. He died of Aids in 1994. The Forest People is one of his most well known
works and where he really got his start in terms of recognition as a respected anthropologist. The book is about the Pygmies and how they live. As an anthologist, Turnbull
lived amongst them and was able to study the population up close. The author has a compelling writing style. He begins the book as follows: "In the northeast corner of
the Belgian Congo, almost exactly in the middle of the map of Africa...lies Ituri Forest, a vast expanse of dense, damp and inhospitable-looking darkness" (Turnbull, 1962, p.11). Here, one can
see that in the space of one sentence, there is a sense of a complete thought. There is attention to detail. The description of the locale leads the reader to
a time and place that is three dimensional. The rest of the book does read quite well in this careful and creative manner. The author writes, chapter by chapter,
about the lifestyle of the Pygmies and how they get along in the world with others. He begins by describing the forest, but then goes on to address many social
issues in terms of how they lived, raised families and coped with hardships. When one of the girls, Lizabeti, was unable to walk, the author helped her with the provision
of crutches and she gleefully used them (Turnbull, 1962) . The others joined her by carving out their own version of crutches (Turnbull, 1962). This demonstrates that there is a
