at war against terrorism and as President Bush said, it is a different kind of war. While it is not a war against Islam by any stretch of the imagination,
certainly Muslim factions are involved in the conflict. Nations in the targeted region are somewhat vulnerable and must take sides. While Israel has always been seen as an ally of
the United States, Turkey is fast becoming a great supporter of the U.S. Few other nations in the Middle East are so committed to the idea of freedom. Turkeys recent
support is nothing new. It is the culmination of years of support. Its leadership and participation in NATO for a number of years--almost since the inception of the organization--has shown
that Turkey is in fact a great supporter of western ideation and democracy. Understanding NATO, Turkeys role in the organization as well as Turkeys role in the Middle East can
help to explain why the nations support is so significant. Of course, anything is possible in the future and Turkey is a Muslim nation, but thus far, it has been
a firm ally of the U.S. and an exemplary member of NATO. II. What is NATO? NATO or the North Atlantic Treaty Organization was founded
in 1949. Since that time there had been a multitude of changes. During the early part of the 1990s, Allied leaders made some decisions to create a "new"
NATO ("NATO," 2000). When building on the general commitment of its members to collective defense, new decisions included the emphasis of the openness of the Alliance to new members
