terms of the political and economic developments. Murillo (2000) conducted an in-depth TOWS analysis examining a hypothetical microelectronics industry. This is an industry deemed necessary for advancement of a country and its economy, but at the time of the Murillo article there as no such industry, so the analysis is based on potential influences on the potential industry. The position that there is not any established microelectronics although there have been moved to increase high technology industries, especially those linked to defence (Karagol, 2006). Looking at this analysis it can be brought up to date by considering what changes have occurred that could influence the development of a microelectronics, or similar, industry. Murillos (2000) analysis uses a TOWS analysis, with the strengths and weaknesses seen as internal factors while threats and opportunities are external factors. Some of the former threats are less prominent. Murillo notes the political instability as a threat with PKK uprisings destabilising some areas and also putting large economic strains on the military budget. The political situation in Turkey had bee such that for many years there had been no clear winner in the elections, but in 2002 this changed. The Justice and Development Party (AKP), an Islamic party, are the first party in recent times to be able to rule without the need to form a coalition (The Estimate, 2002). The rise of this party can be seen as the result of a range of political influences. The decline in the military influence has been important. For a country that wants to join the EU there is a need for a transparent and proven democratic system to be in place.
