perhaps the most significant difference between the two protagonists is not so much their physical environment, but the form of their interaction with others. Both Morrie and Caro are retired,
both in ill-health and both under permanent medical care, but whereas the former is able to enjoy mutually beneficial contact with others (and in particular his former student, the books
author), Caro is reduced to keeping a journal in order to compensate for the lack of warmth and caring human contact in her life.
In effect, the two texts offer opposite ends of the spectrum as far as the care of the elderly
is concerned: Caro is virtually abandoned by a society obsessed with youth and selfish interests, whereas Morrie retains his social participation and integration to the end. It is notable, for
instance, that Caro is not in permanent residential care because that is the only option available: she has family, who might have taken her to live with them, but the
contribution she could have made to family life in terms of her intellect, experience and wisdom is not recognised. Rather, she is perceived as a potential burden and "shunted off"
instead into a nursing home which is understaffed, under-funded and where the staff are disinclined to treat their patients with dignity and respect.
Sarton structures the novel in the form of a diary, allowing the reader an insight into Caros intimate
