but they lost touch until Albom learned that Morrie was dying of ALS (Lou Gehrigs disease) and they reconnected. Albom, a journalist, took on the task of recording and relating Morries thoughts and experience during his final months. In so doing, Albom became the means by which Morrie could leave his last sociological legacy, as he taught Albom, and by extension all the readers of Alboms subsequent book, Tuesdays with Morrie, lessons in dying. The following analytical essay specifically looks at three of Morries lessons: the topics of fear, aging and forgiveness. This is supplemented by consulting Aging in a Changing Society by James Thorson. This examination demonstrates the extreme applicability of Morries comments, observations and experience in helping healthcare practitioners understand the psychological/emotional experience of older adults, particularly those who are suffering from terminal illness or the debilitating effects of chronic disease. Fear Thorson indicates that one of the major fears reported by elderly persons is that they fear the "loss of control" that can come with aging and/or disease (Thorson, 2000, p. 280). Furthermore, elders have reported that they "dont have that much fear of being dead," but rather "it is the process of dying that gives them the greatest concern" (Thorson, 2000, p. 282). Morrie addresses the topic of fear, as well as other negative emotions, explaining to Albom that fears are multiple and can seem overwhelming "Youre afraid of the pain, youre afraid of the grief. Youre afraid of the vulnerability that loving entails" (Albom, 2007, p. 104). However, Morrie also explains that by opening oneself to the feeling, embracing it and allowing it to penetrate ones being, the person comes to know it, which lessens fear and allows the person to detach from the emotion.
