He recorded their time together for many reasons, one of which was that he was hoping he could use the footage for a story and make money to help pay for Morries medical expenses (Tham, 2001). The film strays somewhat from its original written format, such as the fact that Mitch is married in the book and in the film he is afraid of commitment. But, for the most part the images and the powerful messages about Morrie and Mitch are clearly present in the film. With that in mind the following paper analyzes specific elements of the story in its film form. Tuesdays with Morrie: Synopsis The character of Mitch Albom is played by actor Hank Azaria. He is a successful sports writer who travels a great deal in getting one story or another. He essentially "spent his days rushing from airport to airport chasing the next big sports event and had weekly deadlines to submit his columns. His relationship with his girlfriend Janine (Wendy Moniz) suffered because he was fearful of commitment and never had any time for her" (Tham, 2001). Then one day he hears, by watching a TV documentary, that his most beloved college professor, Morrie Schwartz, played by Jack Lemmon, is dying from what is commonly referred to as Lou Gehrigs disease. This disease slowly destroys the body but yet does not affect the mind in any way. And "50% of all patients dying within 18 months of diagnosis" (Tham, 2001).
