tuberculosis. Tuberculosis Tuberculosis apparently has a very long history. As one author notes, in ancient Greece physicians called it "phthisis" which
relates to the characteristic nature of waiting (Tuberculosis Overview, 2007). This author also notes that, "During the 17th and 18th centuries, TB caused up to 25% of all deaths in
Europe. In more recent times, tuberculosis has been called "consumption" (Tuberculosis Overview, 2007). It is essentially caused by a microorganism which is given the name of tubercle bacillus, although it
is also called Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Advameg Inc., 2007). "Tuberculosis (TB) is a serious, re-emerging bacterial illness that usually affects the lungs. TB
bacteria are spread from person to person through the air" (DHPE, 2007). There are considered to be two different types or forms of tuberculosis one being TB infection and the
other TB disease (DHPE, 2007). Most people who have TB have the infection and those who have this infection will have no symptoms (DHPE, 2007). They are also unable to
pass the disease on to other people (DHPE, 2007). However, they do have the ability to get the disease (DHPE, 2007). Tuberculosis
can affect other areas of the body as well and as mentioned can be spread though the air to other people (DHPE, 2007). It is spread through an infected person
