Juveniles are responsible for an astounding percentage of the crime in this country. Even more disturbing is the degree of violence that is
reflected by juvenile crime. Not surprisingly, there has been a progressive move by the criminal justice system towards trying the juveniles that commit the most violent sorts of crimes
as adults rather than trying them in the juvenile system. There are arguments that quite effectively support this move. There are also arguments that just as effectively condemn
it. When considering the question of whether or not juveniles should be tried as adults when the commit certain types of crime, we
must keep in mind that juvenile court was created for a reason. Unfortunately, the statistics that we normally turn to to illustrate an issue are somewhat lacking when it
comes to juvenile crime and the number of juveniles that are tried in juvenile court as opposed to adult court. The statistics that do exist can be quite dated.
They can also be misleading and even inaccurate. While there are national databases for such statistics, all incidents of juvenile delinquency are not entered into these
