At the same time, however, "Trumpet" is a love tale, a tale of perseverance and fortitude in the face of some of the greatest odds. Perhaps "Trumpet" is so interesting because, although it is fiction, it contains many of the elements of the life of a real American jazz musician, Billy Tipton. The story unreeled by Kay is one of love and deception, not of deception in the way that it is commonly expected in a love tale but of a deception carried off by both parties of the relationship not in order to cheat on one another but rather to keep their critical secret both from outsiders and from those closest to them. "Trumpet" is the tale of the life the great jazz musician Joss Moody and partner Millicent Moody. Joss, renowned trumpet player that he was, kept one of the most shocking secrets ever kept. Joss was not a man, he was a woman! Even the couples adopted son Colman was not privy to this great secret. The world as a whole, in fact, was not privy to that information. It would only be when Joss died and his body was processed through the standard autopsy and prepared for burial that "his" deception would be uncovered. "He" and Millicent hadnt of course intended to hurt anyone, least of all Colman. Millicent reflects in the novel: "It was our secret. Thats all it was. Lots of people have secrets, dont they?
