Truman and his role in the beginning of the Cold War. Part A - Plan of Investigation Subject of the investigation: The subject this paper explores is the connection between
President Harry S. Truman and the origins of the Cold War; specifically, we want to see if Trumans policies can be said to have "caused" the Cold War. Evidence suggests
that Method to be used in the investigation: The method to be used in this investigation is a close analysis of articles that have been written about the subject; there
are five in total, but two in particular will be used more than the others. Summary of the evidence: All the articles examined lead to the conclusion that Trumans
speech to the joint session of Congress in March, 1947, was an important step to beginning the doctrine of "containment" that is a cornerstone of the Cold War. In-depth analysis
of sources: The first article is Marc Trachtenbergs review of Melvyn Lefflers book about the origins of the Cold War. Normally, a book review would seem a poor choice
for this type of research, but in explaining Lefflers work, Trachtenberg has gone into substantial detail about Trumans policies, which is exactly what we need. The other principle source is
an article by Lee Edwards that appeared in World Affairs; it examines the Truman Doctrine closely. Three other articles will be examined to fill out details or give a more
complete picture of the way in which Trumans policies. Other sources include the text of Trumans speech, which is part of The Avalon Project at Yale Law School and "Truman
