laws and regulations as they exist at present. Discussion There are many causes of accidents involving trucks, including drivers who are not well-trained; schedules that dont allow for enough rest
time; overloading trucks; and not securing loads properly ("Truck Accident Attorney"). Many accidents are the result of sleep deprivation: "The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that 100,000 police-reported crashes
are the direct result of driver fatigue each year. ... approximately 5,600 people are killed annually in crashes involving commercial trucks" ("Highway Tragedy: Trucker Accused of Breaking Sleep Law"). Many
other accidents are caused by drivers who are using drugs or drinking ("Truck Accident Attorney"). Although the Department of Transportation has instituted some regulation with regard to drivers who use
drugs and alcohol, at present there are (at least according to the Road Safe America web site) no comprehensive national laws regarding the licensing and operation of trucks; regulation of
these carriers is the responsibility of the individual states ("Why Arent Trucking Laws National in Scope?"). State laws are "typically more lax than federal regulations," and in addition, companies that
operate trucks only within a state are "only subject to rules at the state level" ("Why Arent Trucking Laws National in Scope?"). At present, laws regulating the trucking industry are
