Essay / Research Paper Abstract
A 5 page essay/research paper that discusses the differences between Homer's Iliad and the recent film adaptation Troy. The writer argues that the film fails to convey the essence of the ancient Greek worldview. While Homer's poem conveys a world that is distinctly alien from the Judeo-Christian perspective of the Western world roughly 3,000 years later, the film features characters that could easily fit into the modern world. In so doing, despite the jaw-dropping special effects, the movie loses a sense of history, which Homer's epic story most decidedly has. Bibliography lists 2 sources.

Iliad. While, presumably, the plot of the film is taken directly from Homer, it deviates from Homers version of the story of the Trojan War in many significant details. This
approach is rationalized by the screenwriters by asserting that rather than look only at the content of Homers Iliad, they looked instead at the content of the myths and envisioned
the real historical events that may have provided the impetus for mythology. Due to this orientation, the film fails to convey the essence of the ancient Greek worldview. While Homers

modern world. In so doing, despite the jaw-dropping special effects, the movie loses a sense of history, which Homers epic story most decidedly has. The greatest deviation from the
Iliad and Troy is the fact that the movie does not include the action of the gods. In the movie, the gods are repeatedly referred to, but in Homers epic,
they take an active role and most of the action in the epic directly results from divine intervention. Achilles mother, Thetis, does appear and displays prophetic powers, but she
is not identified as a goddess except for when a servant speaks to Achilles about the legends that have begun to be spun concerning him (Troy). While Homer indicates that
the Trojan War was a lengthy conflict and the Iliad begins roughly 10 years into the war, the movie depicts the fall of Troy as occurring within a few weeks
after the abduction of Helen, Queen of Sparta, by Paris, a prince of Troy (Troy). Some characters from the epic are missing entirely (Diomedes, Idomeneus, Calcahs, Hecuba and Cassandra), while
