good father. Everyone who has done some bad things should not be judged merely by a few incidents, or a part of his or her life, but by a life
as a whole. Similarly, when evaluating characters in fiction, the whole of the character needs to be considered. Troy is complex. He wears many hats. He is a worker, a
friend, a husband and a father. His role as a father shines. There is no one who could be better here in terms of how much he cares. Despite his
problems, he does not deny his fatherhood and at some point, he very much wants his children taken care of. When he asks his wife Rose to take care of
his daughter, she replies: "Okay, Troy....youre right. Ill take care of your baby for you...cause....like you say...shes innocent" (Wilson 79). That Troy understood this suggests that he cannot be all
bad. He knows that he has done some bad things, but he sees the innocence in his children and he loves them. Similarly, he wants the best for his sons
Cory and Lyons. An important factor is that Maxson is dishonest. He has an affair. But many people in contemporary society see an affair as forgivable. Of course, that is
not all he does. Still, when evaluating this character as a whole, there is a sense of morality and decency. Similar to judging Bill Clinton solely by his affair, one
will not get the big picture. Indeed, some people live their lives wagging that moral finger, judging people by one particular act, but they do not consider the humanness of
the individual. They simply look at one wrong thing that he or she has done. Similarly, Troy is not a completely evil character. His role as a father is exemplary.
